01 September 1998

A major Millennium essay-writing competition for sixth formers has been launched this week by the Department of French Studies at the University of Reading. A total of £1,000 prize money will be awarded to the best essays entitled: Le vingtiéme siécle: le plus grand siécle pour la France? (The twentieth century: the greatest century for France?) The Department of French Studies at Reading has always been foremost in promoting the linguistic, literary and socio-political aspects of French Studies. Competition entrants may take a generalised or specialised approach to the political, economic, social (including sport), cultural (including literature) and linguistic aspects of French life. Essays must be typewritten in French and be approximately 1,000 words in length.
