ERASMUS study abroad scheme widens horizons – University of Reading
20 January 2000A French Television crew will arrive at the University this week to film a day in the life in Reading of Laurie-Anne Courson, a French student spending nine months in England on the ERASMUS study abroad scheme.
ERASMUS is a grant scheme which has been helping European students to finance a period of study abroad since 1987. Students from this country spend between three and nine months in Europe where they continue their studies while having the opportunity to experience another European culture at first hand. Studying at a university in a different country is also a way of demonstrating maturity, independence and confidence to employers.
Similarly, students from other European countries cross the Channel to spend time at British Universities. Laurie-Anne, who comes from Rennes, is a student from the University of Rennes and is here in Reading studying French. A wide range of degree courses incorporate study abroad, including Agricultural Botany, Biochemistry, Biological Science, Electronic Engineering and Economics.
Countries taking part in the scheme include Denmark, Germany, Greece, Norway, Portugal and Switzerland.
The University of Reading hosts 340 students every year from the European Union.
