Honorary Degrees for Olympic Rower and local public servant – University of Reading

Sir Steve Redgrave, Britain's five-time champion Olympic oarsman, will receive the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters at the University's Graduation Ceremony on Saturday 15 December.

The Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws will be conferred upon Sir William Benyon, who in an extensive career dedicated to public service, has recently retired after thirty-five years as a member of the University's Council.

Sir Steve lives locally and is honoured for his unique achievement as oarsman and Olympian with a long and distinguished rowing career. Two University of Reading graduates, Garry Herbert and Sir Steve's rowing mate James Cracknell are also Olympic gold medallists.

Sir William, from Englefield, was a member of Berkshire County Council from 1964 – 74, MP from 1970 – 1992 and High Sheriff of Berkshire in 1995.

The ceremony will take place at the University's London Road campus at 12.15am.
