Honorary Degree - Taking the home route – University of Reading
09 December 2002Top engineer, Professor Tony Kelly, will receive the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science at the London Road Graduation Ceremony on Saturday 14 December at 12 noon.
Professor Kelly was a self-taught sixth form level student when he entered the university of Reading to read physics in 1946. He lived in Elmhurst Road and was a student at Presentation College, which at the time did not have a sixth form. He taught himself physics, chemistry, geography and geology before taking the University Intermediate Examination to attend the University of Reading, followed by postgraduate degrees from Cambridge. His subsequent distinguished career has included Lectureships in the United States and Cambridge University, where an annual lecture is named after him. He was appointed the Founding Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge, Distinguished Research Fellow in Cambridge's Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy and President of the Institute of Materials. He has also received numerous honours and awards.
Professor Kelly was the Vice Chancellor of the university of Surrey from 1975 until 1994. He was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 1988. He is also a keen yachtsman who took his navigation exams while at Surrey. Professor Kelly will be presented by Professor Atkins from the Department of Engineering..
