Two virtuoso performances by University ensembles – University of Reading
02 December 2003With Christmas coming, the University of Reading's Department of Music is getting into the festive spirit with a special performance of carols by the University's Chamber Choir. The 16-voice 'a capella' choir will be performing Britten's Ceremony of Carols, and English anthems by Rubbra, Howells and Purcell on Monday 8th December at St. Luke's Church, Erleigh Road, Reading. The choir will be conducted by Derek Harris, who is Head of Music at Reading School and has worked with choirs and singers from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and the English National Opera. Mrs Kristina Sekyere, of the Department of Music, said: 'The Chamber Choir are an auditioned choir and members are taken from the University and beyond. Each year, tours abroad take place and this year the choir performed in Paris at Notre Dame and Disneyland. 'Next year they are hoping to travel to Italy and perform in venues in Florence and sing in Pisa Cathedral.' Advance tickets for the concert, which is at 7.30pm, are £6 (£3 concessions). The price on the door is £7 (£4 Concessions). Reading University Chorus and Symphony Orchestra will also be performing at The University Great Hall, London Road, Reading, at 7.30pm on Saturday 6th December. Three soloists from the University – Roxanna Maskall, Kristi King and Edward Harvey – will join the Chorus and Orchestra to perform Schubert's Mass in G major. The audience will also be treated to Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and Beethoven's Symphony No.6. Advance tickets cost £8, (£3.50 concessions). The price on the door is £10 (£5 concessions).
