Launching Centre for Hellenic Studies – University of Reading
17 February 2003Greek Consular leaders and the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain will be among those celebrating the launch of a unique new multi-disciplinary Greek research centre at the University of Reading.
The Centre for Hellenic Studies sees its official launch at the University on Wednesday 19th February with a reception in the Ure Museum of Classical Archaeology, supported by the Greek Embassy.
The Centre, unique in Britain, brings together specialists from seven different Schools and Departments within the University : Archaeology, Classics, Economics, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Philosophy and Sociology. The result is teaching and research in a rich range of subjects including language, literature, history, archaeology, philosophy, religion and art. Its chronological range spans from Prehistoric times to the present day.
The launch will host three visiting speakers who will talk on the theme of the Greek Tradition : Professor Paul Cartledge of the University of Cambridge on Ancient Sparta, Professor Roderick Beaton, Kings College London on the 20th century poet Seferis and Professor Christophoros Charalambakis on the future of modern Greek. The event will be attended by Grigorios, Orthodox Archbishop of Thyateira, Great Britain and other academics and leading figures in Greek cultural bodies in Britain.
The Consul General of Greece Pavlos Alexis Hadzimichalis and the Cultural Counsellor of the Greek Embassy in London, Victoria Solomonidou. The event is being funded by the Greek Embassy as part of its 'Greece in Britain' series of cultural events to mark Greece's presidency of the European Union.
The launch will begin at 2.30pm on 19 February, in Room 109, Palmer Building, Whiteknights campus with the lectures. The reception in the Ure Museum begins at 5.45pm.
