University student radio scoops awards – University of Reading
25 November 2003Junction11, the University of Reading's student radio station, has been awarded Bronze in two categories at this year's BBC Radio 1 Student Radio Awards. Joff Hopkins, Station Manager and presenter of weekly programme 'Smells Like Tuesday' was awarded Bronze in the Best Male category, and Oliver Stirling, Head of IT, gained Bronze in the category of Technical Innovation. The annual awards ceremony, organised by the Student Radio Association and sponsored by BBC Radio 1 and The Radio Academy, reward the best in student radio, and a win may often lead to a job within the radio industry. This year's ceremony was held at Canvas in London, and was attended by nominees and representatives from student stations from around the UK, as well as numerous industry delegates including John Bradford, Director of the Radio Academy, and Andy Parfitt, Controller of Radio 1. On Junction11's awards, Joff said: ’It’s only the second year we've entered, and to get two nominations was great in itself, but to get two gongs out of it as well, it's just fantastic.’ Joff's entry was compiled from six months of on-air output, whilst Oliver's entry was a written entry, focusing on the technical achievements of the station over the past year. This included the live online streaming, integrated studio webcam and chatroom, and the Junction11 website. NOTES TO EDITORS 1.
