In Proportion: race and police stop and search – University of Reading

Nothing is more controversial in police–race relations than the apparent over–representation of ethnic minorities subjected to stop and search. Nationally, this now amounts to an eight times over–representation of black people when compared to white people, an estimation which led Sir William Macpherson to the 'clear core conclusion' that this was attributable to police stereotyping. Professor Waddington (The University of Reading) and Professor Stenson (Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College) have conducted research that challenges this view in three respects. Their findings show
