Sir Terry Frost, 1915 – 2003 – University of Reading
08 September 2003It was with great sadness that the University learned of the death of artist, ex University of Reading Professor and Honorary Graduate, Sir Terry Frost. Born in Leamington Spa in 1915, Sir Terry was one of Britain's most respected abstract artists, who honed his skills in a prisoner-of-war camp during the second world war. He became a full time Lecturer at the Department of Fine Art at the University in 1964, and went on to become Professor of Painting 1977 to 1981. A prolific artist, he mounted during that period, twenty three solo exhibitions and participated in innumerable group shows, whilst continuing to commit himself wholeheartedly to full time teaching in the Department of Fine Art and at summer schools in Norway and Canada. These impressive achievements characterised Terry Frost's great energy which he generously shared with several generations of students, fuelling not only their ambitions but also those of his colleagues. The University is fortunate to own a number of artist's proofs in its collection and to have had such a close association with such a celebrated contemporary artist.
