Does the European Union need a Constitution? – University of Reading
04 February 2004With European Union leaders failing to reach agreement on an EU Constitution in Brussels last December, the University of Reading's School of Law is holding a timely lecture on this critical and controversial issue. Stephen Weatherill, Jacques Delors Professor of EC Law at the University of Oxford, will provide a critical commentary and invoke a stimulating discussion of the need for a European Constitution at this year's Paul Jackson Annual Law Lecture. Professor Weatherill, who was a lecturer at the University of Reading for a period in the 1980s, is a leading scholar in the area of European law and policy and has written authoritative texts in the area – including 'EU Law', which he co-authored with Paul Beaumont. The School of Law's Paul Jackson Annual Lecture was launched last year in recognition of the enormous contributions made by Professor Paul Jackson to the School as one of its founding members and former Head of Department. The lecture also serves the purpose of strengthening ties between the School, law alumni and the local community. After the lecture, a reception is held to provide a more informal setting for friends, colleagues and members of the profession in the local area to catch up.
