Future sport leaders and firefighters on campus – University of Reading
10 June 2004Fire engines, sports experts and schoolchildren will combine to cause an inferno of activity during two events to be held at the University of Reading over the next few days. PHOTO OPPORTUNITY #1: Sport Leadership Challenge TIME & DATE: 9.30-3.30, Friday 11 June, 2004 PLACE: Bulmershe Campus, The University of Reading On Friday 11 June 2004 the new Active in Reading Programme (air) run by the University's Widening Participation Office is teaming up with a group of BA Sports Leadership students to run a one day Sport Leadership Challenge for over 80 local Year 10 pupils. Local secondary schools Ryeish Green, Bulmershe, Highdown, Little Heath, Reading Alternative School and Reading Girls School, are each sending a group of GCSE Physical Education students to find out what it would be like to study sport in higher education. Staff and local sports experts will run sessions on Physiology and Psychology and the team of volunteer students will work with the pupils to develop skills in basketball and cricket, and lead spirited team building and 'student life' workshops. Pupils will also hear about what it means to be a student and the kind of careers that are available afterwards. Pupils will be issued with a team t-shirt and goody bag, containing information on careers in sport and the University of Reading prospectus. PHOTO OPPORTUNITY #2: 'air' event TIME & DATE: 10.00-4.00, Monday 14 June, 2004 PLACE: The Palmer Building, Whiteknights Campus, The University of Reading On Monday 14 June the University's newly launched Active in Reading (air ) programme is running a one-day event with the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire engines and firefighters will be on campus to promote the one-day event to all international and foreign language students. The aim is to translate a national educational website into as many languages as possible and the University and Fire Service are working together to put on a fun day of activity to encourage hundreds of students to get involved. Volunteers will the have the opportunity to attend the grand national launch at Westminster Palace and to be continually involved in the development of the Website.
