Volcanoes, Mars and robots - all in one day – University of Reading
15 June 2004A total of 200 hundred students from schools in Berkshire will enjoy a fun-filled day of learning and hands-on activities at the Science and Technology Awareness Day, to be held at the University on Wednesday 16 June. The local schools taking part are Trinity School in Newbury, and Dedworth Middle School in Windsor. Each school will be represented by students from years 8 and 9. To begin the day, students will attend the Summer Science Lecture, a chance to see how scientists use pressure to make our lives easier. Supported by the University's science ambassadors, students can get involved in various exciting activities throughout the day. Either side of lunch, which is provided by the University, they will experience cutting-edge science, including the Marslander project, electronic engineering, Science Olympics, building robots out of Lego™, the science of volcanic eruptions, Food bioscience processing and the art of colourful chemistry. Mohammed Ansar, the event organiser, says the students are in for an extremely interesting and fun time. "This is a perfect opportunity for young people to experience what science and technology is like in a university environment. We hope the interactive nature of the activities will enthuse and inspire the students to think about pursuing their interest in science at GCSE and post-16 level."
