New appointment advances health research – University of Reading
10 May 2004The School of Health and Social Care continues to develop its established reputation for engaging in high quality research and education with the appointment of Dr Molly Courtenay as Reader in Prescribing and Medicines Management. Dr Courtenay is a qualified nurse and undertook her PhD at the University of Reading, focusing on the application of life sciences to nursing practice. Prior to her new appointment, she was a Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Southampton. Her main research interests lie in the area of prescribing and medicines management. Dr Courtenay is currently on secondment to the Royal College of Nursing as their national advisor for prescribing and medicines management, and she was previously a member of the English National Board curriculum planning group for extended nurse prescribing education and training. Some of her recent research includes an evaluation of independent extended nurse prescribing for the Department of Health and an exploration of the treatment management of patients with skin-related conditions by nurses working in primary care. Dr Courtenay has a number of publications, including five books. Other roles include being Joint Secretary on the Nurse Prescribers' Formulary Subcommittee of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Editor-in-Chief of http://www.nurse-prescriber.co.uk, a nationally recognised website for nurse prescribers. She is also a committee member of the Association of Nurse Prescribing and advises on prescribing issues for several pharmaceutical companies.
