University Sinfonia is sure to hit the right note – University of Reading
29 November 2004As Christmas time approaches, classical music lovers are in for a yuletide treat as The Reading University Sinfonia makes its debut in the magnificent surroundings of the University's Great Hall on Staurday 4 December 2004 at 7.30pm. Directed by its new conductor Alison Wright, the orchestra will be performing Holst's Somerset Rhapsody and Chopin's Piano Concerto No.2 in F minor with soloist Mary Bruce. Mary studied at the Royal College of Music and at King's College, London. She has won many awards, including the Eric Harrison and Beddington Prize and the Kathleen Long Chamber Music Prize. Her work as a soloist, a chamber musician and lecturer take her all round the world. Last year, she performed the Ravel G major Concerto with the 'I Maestri' Orchestra and in July, Grieg's Piano Concerto with the Tudor Orchestra. Mrs Kristina Sekyere, the University Concert Secretary, is looking forward to a great evening. "We are very excited at the prospect of Mary performing in the Great Hall," she said. "Her impressive achievements and world wide appearances speak volumes; Reading is fortunate to have such an admired musician playing at our Christmas concert." The Sinfonia will also be accompanying Reading University Chorus for Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on Christmas Carols and six of the Twenty Polish Christmas Carols by Lutoslawski, with baritone soloist Anthony Scales, conducted by Paul Rhys. Open to members of the public, advanced tickets for the concert cost £7 (£4 concessions). The price on the door is £10 (£6 concessions).
