Launch of Reading's new Café Scientifique – University of Reading
08 October 2004The Reading Lifelong Learning Partnership, of which the University is a key partner, has set up a Café Scientifique in Reading enabling the town to join a growing network of Cafés Scientifique around the world. Café Scientifique is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology while enjoying a drink and a laugh with friends. Topics for Reading's Café meetings are as diverse as cyborgs, forensics, climate change, ethical considerations of genetic testing, viruses and MMR. The debates will be kick-started by academics who are leading experts in their fields. Professor Kevin Warwick, who is internationally renowned for his research on intelligent robots, is launching the Café in Reading on Monday 18 October. He said: "There are a lot of exciting things going on in science at the moment and it is great to be able to chat frankly about what's possible and what is not in the relaxed environment of the Café." RLLP Chair Denyse Coles, from Yell, commented: "Reading is one of the first Learning Partnerships in the country to host Café Scientifique and we are delighted to be able to bring this interesting opportunity to people."
