Expo helps University staff and students to be safe – University of Reading
14 October 2004With a new academic year under way, staff and students at the University of Reading are getting all the help they need to avoid becoming victims of crime. This year, for the first time, the University's Security Office is holding a 'Crime Prevention Expo' exhibition during the first four weeks of term in the Palmer Building at the University's Whiteknights campus. Both staff and students can pop in and get advice on how to keep themselves and their property safe. The stands at the exhibition are being manned by representatives from Thames Valley Police, University Security staff and Reading Borough Council. Visitors to 'Expo' can get advice on personal safety, home security and vehicle security. There is also the opportunity to get items such as bicycles and mobile phones security marked. Mrs Maureen Mills, the University's Security Services Manager, said: "We are using this exhibition to welcome all our new students to Reading – we're sure they are going to have a wonderful time here and we want to help them be as safe as possible. "The aim of this exhibition is to raise people's awareness with some very simple and essential tips that can stop them becoming victims of crime. "The best kind of crime prevention doesn't involve high-tech and expensive gadgets; we just need to teach our staff and students how to reduce opportunities presented to criminals. Together we can make a difference!"
