Visit helps forge closer links with China – University of Reading
18 October 2004Senior representatives of the top universities in China are visiting Reading in the coming week as part of an exciting opportunity for the University of Reading to develop stronger links with the Far East. Twenty-three Vice-Presidents and Principals of Chinese universities, including leading institutions in Beijing, Shanghai and Wuhan, will be at the University between Monday 18 October and Friday 22 October to learn about both the University of Reading and the Higher Education sector in the UK as a whole. Professor Gordon Marshall, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading, said: "It is an immense pleasure to welcome to Britain and Reading so many of the leaders of Higher Education in China. "Reading is a world-class teaching and research institution, but we are very aware that we can only maintain that reputation by fostering our links with similar institutions across the globe. This visit can only help consolidate the growing relationships between ourselves and Chinese universities, which will be of huge benefit to all concerned." During their week in Reading, the Chinese dignitaries will hear talks from the University's Senior Management about Reading management, policy and development. Subjects will include the institution's areas of teaching and research excellence, links with industry and the University vision for its future. They will also hear about the 'big picture' of Higher Education in the UK and how Reading sees its place on the national and international stage. These talks will consider topics such as UK funding systems and the issues that the sector will have to confront in the coming years. The guests will also be welcomed to the Reading area as a whole by the The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Reading, Councillor Richard Stainthorp, who will be hosting a reception in their honour at Reading Town Hall. On their final day, before visiting other parts of the UK, the 23 Chinese Vice-Presidents and Principals will attend a buffet lunch with some of Reading's Chinese students at the University's newly-refurbished Cole Museum of Zoology.
