University Concert will put a spring in your step – University of Reading
28 February 2005This year's spring concert will see the University Chorus joined by the West Forest Sinfonia for a performance of 'Elijah' not to be missed. Following the success of the Chorus' Christmas concert, the University Great Hall promises to be packed to capacity for this marvellous occasion. Mendelssohn's magnificent 'Elijah' is one of the most attractive and best known oratorios of the nineteenth century. Written for large chorus, orchestra and soloists it depicts the main events in the life of the Old Testament prophet. It is structured in two main parts which include a large diversity of choruses, solos, duets, quartets and Bachian chorales. First performed in Birmingham in 1846, 'Elijah' has remained one of the mainstream works of English choral societies ever since. Paul Rhys, conductor of the University Chorus, believes everything is set for a wonderful night. "A piece like 'Elijah' deserves excellent musicians and a top class venue," he said. "I am delighted that the West Forest Sinfonia and an excellent team of professional soloists will be joining the University Chorus for our performance in the Great Hall, a combination certain to do justice to one of Mendelssohn's finest works." Open to members of the public, tickets for the concert cost £10 Adults (£8 concessions), £5 RUMS members. They are available from the University Music Department and Hickies Music Shop, Friar Street, Reading. Refreshments will be served during the interval.
