Reading Sings! – University of Reading
18 July 2005Music Making in Reading, a week-long series of summer music events organised by the University of Reading in partnership with Reading Borough Council, will reach its climax this coming Saturday 23 July with a special workshop day for singers of all ages and abilities. Anyone – with or without singing experience – is encouraged to come and test their voice in the beautiful location and acoustics of Reading Concert Hall for the Reading Sings! event. The singing day will be led by Peter Hunt, who is Head of Choral Studies for Berkshire Young Musicians' Trust. Peter will be joined by the compelling young vocal group Cappella Artois. They will perform a couple of sets of their virtuoso arrangements of rock and classical favourites, and help develop the vocal experience of participants. Peter Hunt is internationally known for his series of publications for schools and choirs called Voiceworks, published by Oxford University Press. His mission in these booklets, and in his approach to conducting choirs, is to lead people into participating in vocal music who may not have realised that they are capable of doing so. He is particularly keen in his new post in Berkshire to encourage every school to develop a choir, and to ensure that teachers are confident to support creative vocal development in the classroom. Reading Sings! brings to a close the Music Making in Reading series, which relates to an international Summer School being held at the University that focuses on music teaching and performance. During the week of events open to the public, highlights included a piano recital by renowned American pianist James Nalley and Paris-based Tran Quang Hai demonstrating the amazing versatility of the human vocal anatomy.
