University announces £2,000 Scholarship plans – University of Reading

High achievers entering the University of Reading from 2006 onwards will be eligible to receive Entrance Scholarships of £2,000. The scholarships are part of a generous package of financial assistance for students that the University has established in preparation for the introduction of deferred tuition fees of £3,000 next year. The University of Reading is committed to doing all that it can to reduce the increased financial burden on University entrants from 2006. The scholarships are in addition to the bursaries of up to £1,300 per year that will be given to students in receipt of the Higher Education Maintenance Grant. Entrance Scholarships of £2,000 will be paid to all students who achieve certain A-Level grades (or equivalent) and apply to particular degree programmes in the following subject areas: Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Food Science & Nutrition, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Natural Sciences, Pharmacy and Physics. These new scholarships are open to all full-time UK/EU and non-EU undergraduates who meet the specified eligibility criteria, and are not means-tested. The University of Reading hopes to extend scholarships to other subject areas from 2007 onwards. These £2,000 scholarships will be given during the first year of a student's degree programme, and will not be repayable. In subsequent years, all students following specified degree programmes, including those who did not meet the Entrance Scholarship eligibility criteria, will be considered for a range of Achievement Scholarships. Achievement Scholarships will reward students who achieve excellent results during each year of study. In this way, all students are motivated to work to their potential. Professor David Rice, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching & Learning, said: "We hope our scholarships will attract students with high academic potential into areas such as the Sciences and Modern Languages. These areas have been designated by the Government as 'strategic subjects' as society has an increasing requirement for well-qualified graduates in these disciplines."
