Successful teaching course to run again – University of Reading

The University of Reading will be repeating its highly successful A Taste of Teaching course in November this year, after the government-run Training and Development Agency for Schools and the delegates themselves were full of praise for the course. Last year, A Taste of Teaching, which provides a valuable insight into the world of teaching and is run by the University's Institute of Education, was overwhelmed with applicants. On both occasions there were waiting lists for places. The government-appointed evaluator said: "The course provided an in-depth understanding of teaching and the various routes into teaching. By the end of day three all participants were much better placed to make an informed decision about applying to train as a teacher." Some of the delegates on the course described it as "excellent" and "bringing reality to the career of teaching". This year's course will take place on Friday 11, Monday 14 and Friday 18 November, and the University is particularly keen to attract applications from people from different ethnic minorities. Prue Goodwin, of the Institute of Education, said: "During the three-day course delegates will consider the role of the teacher, the curriculum, management and staffing structures in schools, specific subject areas and the different routes into teaching. "They will also spend a day in a secondary school to observe lessons and hear about teaching from members of staff. These sessions really are a perfect starting point for anyone considering teaching as a career."
