Professor Allan Buckwell gives Memorial Lecture – University of Reading

This year's renowned Edith Mary Gayton Memorial Lecture at the University of Reading's School of Agriculture, Policy and Development will be given by Professor Allan Buckwell, the Chief Economist at the Country Land and Business Association. Professor Buckwell will be speaking at 8pm on Monday, 7 November, on the topic of 'Managing Land in the Future'. It constitutes the 2005 Edith Mary Gayton Memorial Lecture, which is an annual event at the University where issues of concern to farming and land use are debated. As Chief Economist at the Country Land and Business Association, Professor Buckwell provides economic evaluation to the CLA and leads research necessary to develop and promote their concerns on policies for agriculture, land use, environment, forestry, water and other related issues. He is a sought-after commentator and analyst of these policies on radio and television. Before joining the CLA, he was Professor of Agricultural Economics at Wye College (now Imperial College at Wye, London) from 1984. He was appointed to this chair after a spell as lecturer at Newcastle University. Professor Buckwell's main interest throughout his careers has been the nature and effects of the CAP. He was seconded to the think tank in the Agriculture Directorate of the European Commission from 1995 to 1996. He was the President of the European Association of Agricultural Economists from 1993 to 1996 and he is the current President of the British Agricultural Economics Society. Allan Buckwell seeks economically more rational and balanced agricultural and rural policies for citizens generally and for consumers and producers of food. He believes strongly that the CLA advocates correctly that the CAP must converge into unified measures to harmonise agriculture, the environment and rural development. The event is open to all and free, no ticket required. It takes place at the John Madejski Theatre in the Agriculture building at 8pm on Monday 7 November. The EMG Memorial Fund is a bequest from a former student to be used specifically for sponsoring research in the farm management arena as well as to host the annual lecture. The School of Agriculture, Policy and Development promotes excellence in research and teaching in the natural and social sciences relating to agriculture, rural environments and the countryside, the businesses and people associated with these sectors and the policy cum political environments in which they function locally, nationally, regionally and globally.
