Adult education for all at the University of Reading
Release Date 02 September 2005
Anyone looking to delve deeper into ancient history, brush up on their French, or even examine the phenomenon of Harry Potter will find everything they're looking for when the University of Reading's part-time evening and daytime classes for adults kick off this October. This year, the University's School of Continuing Education is running more than 250 courses, and there is the opportunity to find out more at two open days on Saturday 10 September (between 10am and 2pm) and Monday 12 September (between 10am and 8pm), in Building 24 on the London Road campus. Most courses run for between seven and 10 weeks (with language courses running for 20 weeks) and there is a range of one-day events. Students can learn a new skill, explore a special interest in greater depth, or even earn a formal qualification after a longer period of study. Prospective students have a vast array of subjects available to them in many different fields, including archaeology, the history of art and science. The School also offers a Certificate and Diploma of Higher Education in Management. The School of Continuing Education's Karen Brown believes the programme is bound to be extremely popular once again. "There are just so many interesting and varied topics to choose from," she said. "You can find out if you have what it takes to become the fourth tenor by enrolling in the popular 'Singing from scratch' classes, explore your funny side and have a go at writing comedy, or go on a real archaeological excavation. "Members of the local community have a marvellous opportunity to expand their knowledge in a favourite area or perhaps learn something new. Classes take place during the daytime as well as in the evenings, so everybody has the chance to learn. "The University takes great pride in the success of the programme over the years. It's always satisfying to hear past students comment on how much they have gained from their course and the real sense of enjoyment that went with it."
