Korean Embassy delegation visits Systems Engineering – University of Reading

State-of-the-art technology which can help the lives of people with disabilities will be on display when a delegation from the Korean Embassy visits the School of Systems Engineering at the University of Reading on Thursday 8 September. There will be live demonstrations of some of the many significant developments that have taken place at Reading. For example, there will be a showcasing of 'the Cave' – a walk in, high-resolution 3D video and audio facility which immerses users in a completely realistic, interactive, virtual environment. 'Haptics technology', which allows users to feel as well as see virtual objects on a computer, will also be on display, and there will be a demonstration of a 'torch for the blind'. This is held as any other torch but will alert blind or partially sighted people to the proximity of objects, acting as a replacement for a white stick. The Korean delegation all have an interest in disability and the possible role of computer technology in aiding rehabilitation. Members of the delegation include Sang-Chul Lee, President of the Korean Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disability, Professor Geun-Min Lee of the Department of Rehabilitative Engineering at Daegu University, and Myung-Hwa Yoo, Secretary General of the Korean Society for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disability.
