£800 bursary on offer for Berkshire students who want to teach – University of Reading

19 January 2006

a school classroomThe University of Reading is offering an £800 tax-free bursary for students throughout the Berkshire and Hampshire areas to encourage both undergraduates and postgraduates to take up a career in teaching. The University is welcoming applications to the Student Associates Scheme. This is a Government initiative which offers university students work placements in foundation, primary and secondary schools. The scheme provides a high quality training experience and is designed to help those considering teaching to make an informed decision about their chosen career and also for those who have not considered teaching to see it as a potential career route. The scheme involves two aspects – a taught University-based programme and a school work placement and operates at two levels. Students who opt for level one will be offered a £440 bursary and will spend four days on a taught programme at the University followed by eleven days in a school. The level two option offers students an £800 bursary in return for attending a taught programme lasting six days and twenty days spent at school. Helen Bilton, co-ordinator for the scheme at the University Of Reading, said, 'This is an excellent opportunity for all Higher Education students in the Berkshire and Hampshire areas to find out if teaching is really for them. Past students have found the scheme invaluable as they really get to find out about the nitty-gritty of teaching and find that they are more prepared than others when they begin their teacher training courses.'
