'Moving out' responsibly at the end of term – University of Reading
10 June 2008The University of Reading Students' Union (RUSU) and Reading Borough Council's Streetcare Team have joined together for a new campaign to provide information for students moving out of private residential accommodation this month.
The campaign, set up in response to complaints from local residents regarding the waste generated when students vacate properties at the end of term, provides students with a Moving Out information pack, containing information on:-
• Where to locate the nearest recycling centre
• How to get rid of bulky waste
• Where to recycle glass
• Dates of additional rubbish collection
• What to do prior to moving out
• Checklist for moving out day
• How to settle bills
In addition, the Moving Out packs contains a black landfill bin bag and a clear bag for recyclable items. Extra rubbish collections have been organised for roads where there are a lot of student properties on 21 and 28 June and recycling on 25 June alongside the scheduled collection for the area.
Julia Horne, Vice President of Reading University Students Union (RUSU), said: "With the academic year drawing to a close for University of Reading students, RUSU has been working on ways to help make this as easy as possible. We are all aware that extra waste is a problem when 'moving out' and causes many issues of untidiness and environmental concern. The aim of this campaign is to encourage students to plan ahead for moving in and out of the community ahead of their final day, and to recycle as much as possible."
In the last two weeks of term RUSU, University staff, local residents and members of the Council's Streetcare team will be delivering packs of information to both students currently in private accommodation who are moving out and students living in halls who will be moving into the community for the first time.
Ann Westgarth, University of Reading Community Relations Manager: "Students are generally more interested in environmental issues that many other sectors in society. With appropriate information and advice, they are keen to play a responsible part in their local communities and this includes managing their waste when taking up tenancies in the community and minimising the impact on the local environment and local population."
