University ensembles warm up with summer concert - 15 June – University of Reading
11 June 2008This Sunday, 15 June, the University of Reading's Summer Concert is guaranteed to get the season off to a sizzling start, as the University of Reading Pocket Symphony Orchestra, Chorus and Chamber Choirs celebrate the beginning of summer with some 'hot' music.
Debussy's languorous Prélude à l'aprés-midi d'un faune is the embodiment of a sultry summer afternoon and is a fantastic way to open proceedings, while Berlioz's chastely beautiful Duo-Nocturne is a haunting evocation of a perfumed, moonlit Italian night. They will be performed by the pick of the University's players in chamber music-like arrangements.
The Chamber Choir follows with Purcell's buoyant Rejoice in the Lord Always, and two of Monteverdi's sensuous madrigals. Audiences will be treated to some popular classics towards the end of the first half, including of course, Gershwin's magical Summertime. Vivaldi's exultant Gloria hardly requires introduction, and its energy and optimism are the ideal way to close the concert and send listeners off into what is hopefully a lovely summer's evening.
Mr Stuart Dunlop, University Director of Music and Conductor for the evening, said: "This is a great way to sign off a really good year of music making – it's summertime with backbone!"
Joining the Orchestra and Choir will be a fine team of soloists from the University, including Isabelle Gent, Sam Price, Nick Herrick and Nick MacMahon.
The concert will take place on June 15, at 4.30pm in the Great Hall, on the University's London Road campus in Reading. Tickets are £8 or £5 for concessions and can be booked by contacting Alex Richardson on 0118 378 5256 or email a.t.richardson@rdg.ac.uk. Tickets will also be available on the door.
