Local industry look to uni for future employees
Release Date 25 October 2010
Nearly 70 exhibitors from a wide range of businesses will be hoping to attract highly-skilled potential employees at this Wednesday's University of Reading Autumn Careers & Placements Fair.
Every year, 3000 students graduate from the University with around a fifth staying on in the local area. Due to the excellence of University of Reading graduates, many businesses return to the Fair year on year looking for talented future staff. IBM, Microsoft, Accenture, Enterprise, Network Rail, Deloitte, Ernst & Young will once again be attending Wednesday's event, while Bloomberg and Philips will be making their first appearance.
Taking place in the Palmer Building on the Whiteknights Campus, the Fair offers students the chance to discover which companies offer graduate vacancies, placements, summer internships, work experience and volunteering opportunities.
Explore Learning who provide and online simulation tool for maths and science teaching are once again attending. Their representative said: "The graduates that we meet at the University of Reading are of the highest calibre, from a range of disciplines and have great employability skills. We find that Reading consistently delivers excellent candidates to us, and every year we hire a strong number of Reading graduates making it one of the most successful universities we work with."
The Forces also reap the benefits of the University's graduates.
A representative from the Royal Air Force said: "We attend the Fair because the University of Reading provides high-calibre candidates for the RAF, and we only select the best people who relish a challenge and have the relevant qualities and qualifications."
The University of Reading's Careers Advisory Service (CAS) offers an outstanding service for students, helping them understand what employers are looking for, providing cv advice and undertaking mock interviews. All CAS staff are professionally trained in career development and have worked in graduate recruitment or related industry and have skills to help improve students' employability.
Deputy Director of CAS Naeema Pasha said: "A University of Reading degree is highly sought after and the current economic climate means all graduates need to make sure they are as prepared as possible for when they leave university. The amount and range of employers who attend our career fairs illustrates the breadth of talent Reading produces and the impact they go on to make after graduating."
