Homes, allotments and recreation spaces proposed for the Manor site
Release Date 03 February 2011
The University of Reading has submitted a planning application to Wokingham Borough Council for 126 homes, recreational space and community allotments on The Manor site at Shinfield.
The brownfield site to be developed is located behind St. Mary's Church, Shinfield, and next to part of The Manor site previously developed for housing. The proposals, which include a significant proportion of affordable housing, will be for 2, 3 and 4 bedroom family homes, with a small number of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments.
The University received considerable local support for its plans to redevelop the derelict site at the public exhibition on the proposals held in 2010. The main findings from that exhibition can now be found in a Statement of Community Engagement (SCE), which has been submitted with the planning application.
David Savage from The University of Reading said: "We are confident that our proposals will provide much needed high-quality housing and associated recreational areas and allotments for the area, as well as offer a much improved outlook for neighbours as the site's derelict buildings are developed. The University will reinvest funds from the development in educating the next generation of talented young people and conducting outstanding research."

Notes to editors:
- The Manor lies outside of the South of the M4 SDL but within the existing settlement of Shinfield.
- The number of proposed properties in the final scheme offers a balanced layout, which respects the prevailing character of the surrounding area and the nature of the site.
