Reading launches unique management course for construction industry
Release Date 07 March 2011
With employer concerns surrounding the changing nature of the building industry, the University of Reading is delighted to launch the first open-access programme of higher education management learning tailored to the sector.
‘Management for building services engineering' can either be studied as part of the University of Reading's full MSc in Intelligent Buildings, or completed as a stand-alone course, contributing to an individual's professional development.
The five-day course, developed in collaboration with Moving Ambition and funded by Progress South Central, will offer valuable new insights to managers within the engineering industry. Strategic management, managing stakeholders, project planning and building customer confidence will all be covered in this innovative residential learning programme.
University of Reading experts and respected contributors in the sector will lead the sessions which will examine stimulating staff retention and skill development, sub-contracting advantages and pitfalls as well as setting targets and maximising their attainment. The course also includes a site visit at which participants will be encouraged to practically apply some of the course subject matter.
Dr Abbas Elmualim, from the University's renowned School of Construction Management and Engineering, said: "The development of our new MSc module, ‘Management for building services engineering', has occurred in response to employers' concerns that the evolving and increasingly multi-skilled nature of the sector requires better higher level management skills. There is also widespread acknowledgement that there is value in establishing a benchmark open to all types and sizes of sector companies.
"With extensive input from sector employers, trade associations and the industry's skills council this new module offers innovative personal development methods and will help raise the standard of management in the sector."
The first programme begins on the Whiteknights campus on Monday 6 June 2011 and is priced at £850 per participant. On-campus accommodation will be available.
