Deputy High Commissioner for Pakistan visits Reading

Release Date 24 March 2011

The Deputy High Commissioner for Pakistan shares a joke with Dr Andy Russell from the Department of Chemistry

The University of Reading welcomed the Deputy High Commissioner from Pakistan during a recent visit to discover more about the University's international research.

Mr Asif Ali Khan Durrani was particularly impressed with the Chemical Analysis Facility, a £4.5 million analytical instrument suite that underpins innovative research in archaeology, agriculture, soil science, engineering, chemistry and pharmacy.

Currently Pakistan is looking to develop its university teaching staff through a number of scholarships both within and outside the country through its Higher Education Council.

Professor Richard Ellis, Dean of Life Science at Reading, said: "The University of Reading has a substantial number of alumni of long-standing from Pakistan. We were particularly pleased to have had this opportunity to update the High Commission on our current research and our excellent facilities for research students."

The visit was facilitated by Heather McKeever in Reading International Office and Professor Waheed Khan, a visiting academic to the School of Maths and Physical Sciences, and friend of the University. Professor Khan has held the post of Vice-Chancellor at Gomal University, NWFP, Pakistan, and has also acted as Education Advisor to the Ministry of Higher Education, Pakistan.
