University of Reading leaps up league table
Release Date 17 May 2011
The University of Reading has been ranked 32 in the 2012 Guardian University Guide (published in 2011), 13 places higher than the previous year.
Reading was also number one for its departments of agriculture and food in the league table.
The university is unique in having individual research projects that cover the whole food chain, from farm to fork. The University's Centre for Food Security opened at the end of last year and joins together existing areas of research excellence to provide a platform for developing real-world solutions to tackle issues such as changes in climate and land use, over-nutrition in western societies, changes of nutrition in developing countries and increased awareness of the environmental consequences of food production.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading Professor Gordon Marshall said: "We are delighted to have moved up in the Guardian league table, as we constantly strive to improve. Our ranking reaffirms the high regard in which our students hold the quality of teaching and research at the University across a broad range of subjects."
Reading was also in the top ten for education (3), earth and marine sciences (4), art and design (6), building and town /country planning (8) and archaeology (10).
In addition to the news on the Guardian league table, the latest employability data for Reading's 2010 graduates shows its best result for a decade. The percentage of Reading 2010 graduates who reported they were in graduate level work and/or study has risen by 3.3% from 2009 to almost 70%. Those reporting being unemployed has fallen to 6.6% from 8.5%.
