Helping more businesses make use of Reading inventions
Release Date 23 January 2012
Scientific innovations from the University of Reading are among those featured on a new website aimed at bringing businesses and researchers together.
Among the inventions highlighted on the new South East IP website are:
- Corneal graft technology, producing artificial eye corneas from stem cells
- New ways of producing moisture-absorbing hydrogels, which could be used for improved wound dressings, nappies or in agriculture
- Processes to create efficient electrodes more cheaply for fuel cells and solar panels.
The technologies are among those from Reading listed as part of a new collaboration between five of the South East's leading research institutions, launched today (23 January 2012).
The service is designed to help businesses and investors to find the new technologies they need to grow their businesses, and for researchers, a route to market for their ideas.
At the University of Reading, the scheme is in addition to the University's existing networks and collaborations that link research areas with possible end users of that research, providing a catalyst for innovation in the economy.
David Gillham, Director of Research and Enterprise at the University, said: "We have long understood the benefits of matching our research excellence with the needs for business, but this scheme allows us to partner with other institutions, to deliver the strongest possible portfolio of regional research excellence.
"This collaboration provides a platform for Reading researchers and scientists to find a wider audience among business and investors, who will in turn benefit from the innovative techniques and technologies being developed here and at our partner institutions."
With initial funding of £75,000 from the UK Intellectual Property Office the new site will accelerate the exploitation of innovation in the South East by:
- providing a single place for investors and companies looking for specific technologies, to look for Intellectual Property from a collection of institutions in the South East;
- providing a service to help participating institutions source specific expertise and equipment from other institutions in the network; and
- encouraging collaborations and joint funding applications.
The South East IP partners are The National Physical Laboratory, the Universities of Surrey, Reading, Sussex and Royal Holloway University of London. Together, these five institutions produce a large part of the South East's research. Now, for the first time, investors can find up to date information on research output from every institution in one place.
