Reading voted best university green space in the UK
Release Date 15 October 2013
The University's Whiteknights campus has once again been voted amongst the best and most popular green spaces in the UK.
Whiteknights has been ranked number six out of over 1,400 green spaces entered into the Green Flag People's Choice Award, and is the only university campus to appear in the top 10.
All Green Flag Award-winning parks and green spaces were entered into the annual poll with the public asked to vote for their favourite.
Reading received its third Green Flag Award earlier this year in recognition of its well-maintained and well-managed campus. The award also recognises the University's green waste recycling and composting initiatives - it reduced its total waste by over 100 tonnes in 2012/13 - as well as energy conservation and carbon reduction targets, and efforts to encourage car sharing and green travel.
The Green Flag Award scheme is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK, run by the organisation Keep Britain Tidy. Grounds management, innovation and the way facilities are tailored to the needs of the community are taken into account.
