As A-level students pick up their results, Sir David Bell, University of Reading Vice-Chancellor, said:
"I would like to offer my congratulations to students across the country on their exam success. I would also pay tribute to teachers and parents for all that they have done in support.
"There is no such thing as an easy A-level as these are tough qualifications which require commitment to study, dedication and hard work. For our part, we look forward to welcoming thousands of new students to the University next month.
"Reading's application and offer numbers continue to be strong. We had seven applications for every place this year and, broadly, we are on track to match last year's first year intake of 3125.
"We've recruited close to 20% more students with higher grades - those with at least ABB+ or equivalent - than last year. Our undergraduate overseas numbers are particularly strong, already surpassing the numbers recruited last year. We have strong recruitment across the vast majority of our courses particularly Biological Sciences; Psychology; English Literature; Art; Agriculture and Systems Engineering, as well as those in Henley Business School. We are really pleased Modern Foreign Languages recruited well, apparently bucking the recent national trend of a shortage of applicants in this subject area.
"Across the majority of our subjects, we are offering a limited number of additional places for well qualified applicants through Clearing. We also have places available to students who did better than expected, and want to ‘trade up' and come to Reading through the Adjustment process.
"It is a very competitive market but we are bullish about what we offer to students. We remain one of the leading research-intensive institutions in the UK. We have 93% of graduates in work or further study six months after leaving. And as this week's National Student Survey demonstrated, a record proportion of our students are satisfied with their education and experience here."
