Nigeria Ebola-free comment: Dr Ben Neuman says Nigeria's triumph over Ebola is a blueprint for how to tackle Ebola properly

Release Date 20 October 2014

Nigeria has been declared officially free of Ebola after six weeks with no new cases. Dr Ben Neuman, Virologist, University of Reading provides comment.

"As recently as August, Ebola was spreading out of control in Nigeria. That is why it is wonderful news that Nigeria is now Ebola-free.  Nigeria's triumph over Ebola is both a blueprint for how to tackle Ebola properly and the best reason for optimism that this outbreak can still be stopped.

"Nigeria's success did not come easily - it required a monumental effort to track down new cases and sadly cost the lives of a few brave medical professionals.  However, it bodes well for the Western world that a developing nation like Nigeria was able to tackle Ebola even without help from the new drugs and vaccines that are on the way."
