NGO language problems: New research has identified that many NGO workers on the ground don't speak the local language, which can lead to problems communicating with the very people they are trying to help and in the efforts to rebuild their communities. Two Reading academics were involved in the research - Prof Helen Footitt and Wine Tesseur (both from Modern Languages) - and were the co-authors of this blog for The Conversation.
User Not Found: User Not Found is a play currently showing in cafes around Edinburgh as part of the Fringe Festival. The theatre company Dante or Die has produced the performance as part of their collaboration on a research project, led by the Department of Film Theatre and Television at the University of Reading, and working with several other partners. The play explores the theme of what happens to our on-line data - social media communications, photos, music, videos etc. - when we die and has received excellent reviews so far.
Preserving the chocolate industry: A reporter for BBC Radio Berkshire (approx. 20 mins in and throughout the show) visited the International Cocoa Quarantine Centre this morning and spoke to Dr Andrew Daymond (Crop Production) about how research that takes place at the centre helps protect the global chocolate industry.
New health outreach programme: The University of Reading, in partnership with the Royal Berkshire Hospital and Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust, has launched a new project to help school children from all backgrounds to consider healthcare careers by giving them the opportunity to experience various job roles in health and life sciences. Prof Laurie Butler (Psychology) was featured on the BBC Radio Berkshire (within the first 5 minutes) news bulletins discussing the new initiative.
Proton beam cancer treatment comes to Reading: The installation of a new proton beam therapy unit took place yesterday at the University's Thames Valley Science Park. The Rutherford Centre is the third of its kind in the UK and will offer proton beam treatment to cancer patients across the Thames Valley and beyond. Prof Richard Ellis (Director of Health Partnerships) was quoted in this news story in The Business Magazine.
