Local Hero nomination for professor who is helping change the lives of mothers
09 October 2018
A University of Reading professor who has dedicated time to helping mothers in Reading increase their confidence has been nominated for a Pride of Reading award.
Professor Carol Fuller, Professor of the Sociology of Education in the University’s Institute of Education, is nominated in the Local Hero category. The Marvellous Mums scheme she leads in Whitley helps mothers to recognise their skills and qualities in order to make positive changes in their lives.
The annual Pride of Reading awards celebrate businesses, initiatives and individuals who make a difference to the community. The University sponsors the Young Person of the Year category, while its Refugee Scholarship scheme is shortlisted for the Community Champion prize.
Professor Fuller said: “I am thrilled by the nomination as well as by the kindness and support we have had. I think Marvellous Mums works because of the combination of academics, community and business working together to help and support women.”
The Marvellous Mums initiative is run by Professor Fuller and colleague Dr Maria Danos, and supported by WCDA, HomeStart Reading and Workday.
The 10-week course sees participants meet weekly in Whitley Community Centre Café and on the University campus to discuss challenges they face and ways to overcome these, such as by engaging with local government or each other. Those struggling with unemployment are also put in touch with local employers.
The theme of the Pride of Reading awards for 2018 is ‘International Reading’, which celebrates the town’s links with many parts of the world.
The winners of all 17 categories will be announced on awards night, which is hosted by Chris Tarrant and takes place on 2 November at the Royal Berkshire Conference Centre in Reading.
