Students receive first RIBA prizes to be awarded at new School of Architecture
21 August 2019
Three students have become the first to be awarded prizes for excellence from the University’s new architecture school.
Daniel Hellyer, Rosie Clarke and Jacob Hill have been awarded prizes for excellence from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
The three students, who are all at various stages of their university careers, were named winners of the RIBA Berkshire Society of Architects’ Conrad Birdwood Willcocks Awards for Technical Excellence and Measured Drawing.
This is the first year that the award, which celebrates the talent of architecture students at the University, has been made by the Berkshire Society of Architects - a Branch of the RIBA which represents nearly 500 architects across the county.
Daniel, Rosie and Jacob received their awards from Jennifer Forakis, Chair of the Berkshire Society of Architects, at the School of Architecture’s End of Year Show of students’ work in June.
Reading School of Architecture’s first students joined in September 2016. To celebrate the first cohort of degree-level students’ graduation, the Berkshire Society of Architects launched the Award in memory of Conrad Birdwood Willcocks, a prominent local architect in the 20th century.
Architecture lecturer at the University of Reading, Amy Butt said:
“We are delighted that Daniel, Rosie and Jacob have been presented with these awards from RIBA Berkshire.
“These awards recognize the critical thinking, technical skills and applied knowledge which are fundamental to the practice of architecture.
“This is a significant year for architecture at the University of Reading with our first cohort of students graduating from our BSc Architecture course. The recognition of outstanding work by students such as Daniel, Rosie and Jacob forms a critical part of our wider acknowledgment of the work of students and staff to establish a standard of excellence in the school.”
As well as achieving its first graduates, Reading School of Architecture has just obtained RIBA Validation, which means that its course and examinations achieve the standards necessary to prepare students for professional practice as architects.
