Government Faith Minister hears from University and Reading religious leaders
03 July 2019
Faith leaders based in Reading joined the University of Reading coordinating chaplain to speak to the Government about the challenges of supporting local needs.
During a meeting hosted at the University of Reading, representatives from Reading-based faith organisations met with Faith Minister, Lord Bourne to discuss how the University and other partners can support cooperation between faith communities.
Following the meeting, Faith Minister Lord Bourne said:
“Across Berkshire, faith groups are taking the lead in supporting their communities, going the extra mile to improve the lives of the most vulnerable in our society.
“Offering training, essential services or vital interfaith forums, these groups are doing inspiring work to support their community and promote interfaith work.
“I am delighted to see so many volunteers, faith and community groups working together to bridge beliefs and backgrounds and build a stronger, more integrated society.”
The Revd Mark Laynesmith, Managing Chaplain for the University of Reading said:
“The meeting was a great opportunity to hear about good practice from around the country on supporting interfaith work as well as the wonderful work going on already in Reading.
“The University is keen to support ways to foster work between faith communities and I was able to share about work that our students are already doing. We hope that our work with local faith leaders and community groups can develop and we look forward to the views of local partners who took part the University’s strategy consultation.”
The University of Reading runs a multi-faith chaplaincy centre that offers support to students and staff of all faiths and none, and the Reading University Students Union (RUSU) has a number of faith societies
