Covid 19: Schools 'could reopen in June - expert comment

23 April 2020

Expert comment

Dr Helen Bilton, professor of outdoor learning at the University of Reading, said:

"Reopening schools in June could come as a shock to many, especially as initial thoughts were around starting afresh in September. However, I believe it could be achieved if school leaders reassess their approach to 'the classroom'. One approach could be to move classes outside regularly, even if it is just for desk work.

"Research has shown that the period immediately before the lunch break is the unhealthiest of the school day as temperatures begin to rise. If teachers can keep windows open to encourage a better flow of oxygen, the classroom would become a lot healthier and a more enjoyable place to be.

"On a hygiene level, teachers may need to get back into the habit of regularly cleaning their classrooms and equipment. For nurseries, this would involve regular washing of toys, moreso than they do already.

"Some schools in Denmark have already started to reopen with social distancing measures in place. I think we need to keep a close eye on how that approach pans out, to see if we can realistically implement a sooner return to school here in the UK."
