Covid-19 expert comment: School closures

19 March 2020

Professor Helen Bilton, from the Institute of Education at the University of Reading said:

"Schools have been planning for this situation and have already put plans in place to send pupils home with work to do and packs to enable them to do it. Parents will also be emailed with ideas for activities to do, and resources such as web sites and YouTube videos for a variety of subjects.

"My advice for parents is to make sure children spend time outside - get out and see nature, whilst being mindful of not getting too close to other people. Also, be sure to open windows to get fresh air in and have rules about time on electronic devices.

"This is a new situation for all of us. We all need to be patient while this new 'at home' routine beds in. It is one step at a time but trust your teachers to do the best they can for your children."
