COVID-19 comment: Sport may need state aid to function

25 March 2020

COVID-19 expert comment

Dr James Reade, sports economist at the University nof Reading, said:

“The current shutdown of sport is unprecedented in peacetime, and it is having profound impacts on all areas of life, not least how sport can function. How can sports clubs continue to function without any cash flow, and without any sense that any will come at any time soon?

"Sports leagues face the same problems as their clubs, and it seems hard to imagine anything other than significant state aid being required in sport for it to continue as we know it.”
