COVID-19: Dementia link unclear but certainly warrants further study - expert comment
26 May 2020
"Age is the greatest risk factor for dementia and it is becoming evident that the elderly having been particularly affected by COVID19. This current study looked into the genetic links between dementia and COVID-19 and suggests a link between ApoE (e4) and severe COVID-19.
"Given the complexity of dementia and the combination of factors, of which ApoE is one, it is unclear the direct interaction between COVID-19 and the genetics of dementia. It does however highlight the need to dig deeper into the susceptibility of the elderly and specifically those living with dementia.
"As further research looks to shed light on the individual risk of developing COVID19 from a genetic point of view, we need to continue to protect the elderly and if classed as vulnerable by the NHS guidance make sure they are shielded from this pandemic. In this respect the current work suggests that those living with dementia should now be included in this group."
