Changes at University of Reading Malaysia
Thursday, 25 April 2019
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement, Enzo Raimo, is visiting our Malaysia campus this week and, along with Provost Professor Wing Lam, has spoken to colleagues about the redevelopment of the University strategy and the changes that will be necessary to consolidate our position there.
The University of Reading Malaysia will be providing a more concentrated portfolio of foundation and undergraduate degree courses in business, real estate, finance, accounting, quantity surveying and psychology, with a stronger emphasis on graduate employability, professional development and addressing industry demand for much-needed talent.
As a first stage, the undergraduate 2+2 programme in pharmacy, which teaches students for two years in Malaysia and two years in the UK, will no longer accept new students. We are also seeking accreditation of new undergraduate courses. Work on the structure of our operation there will continue in the coming weeks to ensure the long-term sustainability of the campus, with decisions about any further changes in mid-June.
Professor Robert Van de Noort, University of Reading Vice-Chancellor, said: “As we continue to grow our global links, the University of Reading Malaysia allows us to play a leading role in one of the world’s fastest-growing and most vibrant regions. Our plan puts our efforts on educating students for their entire degree in Malaysia in sought-after professional subjects, with a strong focus on careers.”
The University will seek to further increase collaboration between its Malaysia and UK campuses and continue opportunities for student placements. The student mobility programme already allows students in Malaysia the opportunity to spend part of their studies on the UK campus, and vice versa, with an increasing number of students taking up the opportunity. This contributes to Reading’s growing commitment to bring more international experience and opportunities to all its undergraduate courses.
Professor Wing Lam, Provost and CEO of University of Reading Malaysia, said: “We are confident that with this new focus, the University of Reading Malaysia will continue to provide the internationally recognised, excellent academic experience that our talented students want in a Malaysian setting.”
