Awards & Prizes

• Dr Hilary Geoghan (Geography and Environmental Science) has been awarded a £1.3 million grant through NERC’s Engaging Environments programme to engage the public on the big issues in environmental science
• Dr Kathryn Francis, Dr Nat Hansen and Professor Philip Beaman (Philosophy) won the University of Reading Open Research Award for their project Open and Online Experimental Philosophy, presented at the Open In Practice Conference on 4 April
• Dr Alastair Culham (Botany) is this year’s recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Jones Bateman Cup for original research in horticulture which has a demonstrable potential to advance the science and practice of horticulture or horticultural production
• Dr Yasmine Shamma (English Literature) has been awarded a British Academy grant for her project ‘Lost and found? A digital archive of testimonies of migration, displacement and resettlement’
• Professor Jeanine Treffers-Daller and Dr Christiana Themistocleou (Modern Languages & Linguistics) have been awarded funding from the Council for British Research in the Levant to carry out a project which looks at code-switching and identity styles among Greek-English and Turkish-English bilinguals in Cyprus

Strategic Project Updates

• Two new ‘toolkits’ have been launched to help students and Academic Tutors get the most out of our Academic Tutor System. Each toolkit offers a range of resources, including advice for getting the most out of tutor meetings, how to best prepare, FAQs and links to key policies

• Professor Julia Waters (Modern Languages & Linguistics) delivered the 2019 Sonia Marks Memorial Lecture at the University of Sydney, entitled ‘Teaching “French” in Brexit Britain’
• Professor Eleanor Fisher (Agriculture, Policy and Development) has been appointed as a new member of ESRC’s Strategic Advisory Network
• Two new online courses have launched on FutureLearn: ‘Supporting Successful Learning in Primary School’ and ‘Supporting Successful Learning in Secondary School’. Designed by Professor Helen Bilton (Institute of Education), they are aimed at teaching assistants in primary and secondary schools, but current teachers, and teachers returning to work may also find it useful
• A computer model developed by Dr James Reade and Dr Carl Singleton (Economics), which is designed to forecast football scores, went head to head with BBC Football Focus sport pundit Mark Lawrenson on 20 April – and won
