Single use cup numbers decrease across University
Tuesday, 13 August 2019
Between 1 August 2018 and 31 July 2019 380,000 hot drinks were sold across the University campuses. Over 46% of these were sold in reusable cups, removing over 174,000 single use cups from the University waste stream.
This was achieved by the successful implementation of a 20p tax on disposable hot drink cups. The money generated from this was set aside and has been spent on 5000 reusable mugs, bottles and meal boxes to be given away to students during Welcome Week. This tax will continue during the 2019/20 academic year with the aim of selling over 50% of hot drinks in reusable cups. This will fund more sustainability initiatives within catering services.
Reusable mugs are on sale across all catering venues for £4.00
