Learning languages for a healthy brain
Thursday, 14 February 2019
On International Mother Language Day 2019 (Thursday 21 February 2019), we are celebrating the benefits of multilingualism. At this interactive event (20:00–22:00, Room GO1, Building LO22, London Road Campus), researchers from the Centre for Literacy and Multilingualism and Bilingualism in the Brain Lab at the University of Reading, will explain what language learning can do for you, and its importance for the ageing brain.
Evidence suggests that speaking more than one language is good for your mind and brain. This is because bilinguals must constantly choose which language they will use each time they speak, but also prevent their non-relevant language from interfering.
Multilinguals ‘train’ the brain to be more flexible when switching between languages. This process can physically change the structure of the brain, and might even prove beneficial in older age.
Admission is free and open to the public. You can find out more information or book a place here.
