University restructuring portering and some catering services
Wednesday, 30 January 2019
In recent months, the Vice-Chancellor has spoken with colleagues across the University about the significant financial pressures we face. These have arisen out of an increasingly competitive student recruitment environment, the uncertainties of Brexit, the funding review and increased pension costs.
Different Schools and Functions are working on plans to achieve financial balance, and the University is offering a Voluntary Redundancy Scheme to support Schools and Functions in this endeavour – and to reduce the need for compulsory redundancies. The scheme is currently open and offers colleagues the opportunity to apply to leave the University on an agreed date in exchange for an enhanced redundancy payment.
The University is restructuring its portering and some catering services to adapt to the changing demand for these services. Around 80 colleagues have been consulted on these changes, which are likely to result in a loss of around 24 roles.
The changes are likely to be implemented over the next couple of months, with a new structure in place in spring.
Our HR colleagues are working with the relevant services to put the new structure in place, with a clear focus on trying to avoid compulsory redundancies where possible.
Colleagues from catering and portering services can apply through the Voluntary Redundancy Scheme if it suits their circumstances.
