We are delighted to announce the winners of the University Teaching Fellowship scheme for 2019.
The Fellowship is a prestigious and competitive award for staff who demonstrate individual excellence and dedication to the development of teaching and learning within the University and beyond. It also aims to support staff to further develop in the area of teaching and learning.
The application process was extremely competitive this year, and many of the applications put forward were of an exceptionally high quality. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to apply.
The winners of the 2018/19 University Teaching Fellowship scheme are:
- Dr Carol Padgett (Henley Business School) – The UTF Selection Panel was particularly impressed by Carol’s sustained and highly reflective approach to developing excellence in T&L; by her excellence in using technology to supplement traditional teaching methods and in adapting practice to the needs of students; and by her evident commitment to developing colleagues in Henley, across the wider University and beyond.
- Amanda Millmore (School of Law) – The Panel welcomed Amanda’s clear commitment to providing high quality learning experiences for students, informed by her legal practice experience, and to being an active part of the T&L community at Reading and across the sector. The Panel recognised Amanda’s impact on student learning and the student experience, particularly in respect of employability, student support and working in partnership with students.
- Catherine Langran (School of Chemistry, Food and Pharmacy) – The Panel was impressed by Catherine’s broad involvement with, and impact on, T&L, both within her immediate context, across the University and beyond. This included the implementation of innovative student-led healthy living assessments to enhance experiential learning. Catherine’s teaching philosophy focusses in particular on student wellbeing, engagement and employability.
- Clare McCullagh (Centre for Quality Support and Development) – The Panel was impressed by the breadth of impact of Clare’s work in designing and leading the Academic Practice Programme (APP) and in establishing the University’s teacher development provision at UoRM and NUIST. It also recognised Clare’s role in raising the profile of T&L across the University and the wider sector in relation to her work with Advance HE and her dissemination work, both nationally and internationally.
- Dr Nicola Abram (School of Literature and Languages) – The Panel was impressed by Nicola’s evident passion for, and commitment to, a diverse curriculum and inclusive teaching. It welcomed the strong personal narrative that was woven throughout her application and brought together her research, teaching and leadership in relation to a core commitment to social justice. The Panel recognised the impact of Nicola’s work across her Department and School and across the wider University and sector.
The winners’ achievements will be recognised formally at the Celebrating Teaching & Learning Success event later this year on Wednesday 25 September.

About the scheme
The University Teaching Fellowship scheme is hosted annually by the Centre for Quality Support and Development. It aims to recognise and reward excellence in teaching and the support of student learning, and to raise the status of teaching in the University as a scholarly activity.
